When traveling around Australia and checking out the local scene, you are sure to come across some typical Australian dishes which you really should try some of! From meat products that you won’t typically find in western supermarkets to the standard Australian meals, you might need to acquire a taste of, nothing’s off the table!
We’ll start off with Vegemite – the most likely one that ‘foreigners’ may encounter, and more often than not, end up hating. Many people will tell you it’s disgusting, but you should try it out at least once.
A dark brown paste made from various vegetables, Vegemite also contains yeast extract and spices. It not only looks and smells disgusting but also tastes disgusting, very salty and not at all sweet. The popular way of eating it is on buttered bread or toast, avocado, melted cheese or tomato.
Next up is the huge culinary hobby in Australia that is the barbecue. The barbecue, or ‘barbie’, is a popular way for Aussies to socialize. Thanks to the fantastic weather all year round, when you think of Australia you think of surfing, beautiful weather, kangaroos and the barbecue. Local councils put up grills at popular tourist spots like beaches for the general public to use.
A typical Aussie barbecue has burgers, sausages, steak, fresh seafood, bread, and tomato or barbecue sauce. The common phrase “Throw another shrimp on the barbie” refers to prawns and not shrimps! And of course a few stubbies – beer to the non-natives. Australians conduct barbecues everywhere, not just at home.
Any backpacker in Australia is sure to have tried Australia’s favorite chocolate biscuit… the Tim Tam. Even if you eat one, it’s hard not to eat a second or third! You WILL become a convert in a very short while.
The Tim Tam slam way:
Bite off the diagonal corners off the Tim Tam
A cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate.
Use the Tim Tam as a straw to suck the drink through.
Before it turns too soggy and falls into your drink, you gobble up the soft, gooey (warm!) goodness.
The classic Aussie meat pie is a popular snack to have on the go, and almost every bakery, corner shop and supermarket will sport a display case with ample choice. And there are the specialty pie shops! Different savory pies will usually be stuffed with minced meat, mushrooms, onions, gravy, and cheese. It is also a worthy snack to chomp on after a long night of partying. After drinking and dancing your night away, you will end up with a meat pie in your hand while waiting for a taxi.
